Tree Spirits

A series of limited edition aquatint etchings.

From ancient times, man has venerated, even worshipped trees. In Japanese the word for tree, 'Ki', also means spirit. Trees have a special place in our world, providing us with life itself in the air we breathe, shade, shelter, food, and wood for every need. Trees are also special for the spiritual pleasure they give to man. Man is dwarfed by most trees; they are beautiful even in old age and when gnarled and twisted by time they fill us with awe as we gaze up into their inaccessible branches.

Dayspring     £32.00

One mightier than the oak rises to shine and give light and life.

Moot      £32.00
Huge Beech Trees, their smooth grey bark reflecting the cool light of the sky, dominate a mound on the chalk downs. Grouped together, visible for miles, once men met here to debate, discuss and govern underneath the ancestors of these same Beeches.

Oratory     £32.00

The forest is a cathedral, the lace work of branches beautiful as any gothic tracery as light diffuses reflects and dazzles, lighting the pillars of trunks, convoluted and twisted by those natural carvers, weather and time. This living breathing building rustles and whispers, sometimes groans and cracks as if to keep up a continuous oration between its living parts.

Osmosis     £32.00
Water rises drop by drop, droplet by droplet, limpid clear water dissolving goodness from the earth itself made of fallen leaves. The precious liquid rises slowly, slowly through filaments of roots, channels of bark until at last it reaches the leaves high above. The tree drinks. Drop by drop the water gathers on the perspiring leaves to rise still further as invisible vapour into the air, sucked ever upwards by sun and wind to fall once more to the waiting earth.

Roots     £32.00

Secure in the dark earth the tree has its beginnings, reaching for sustenance the roots reflect the branches, the branches reflect the roots. Unseen the roots anchor and feed until flood or land slip reveal their intricacies. Slowly but unerringly the roots will seek further hidden depths, to escape unbidden exposure. Theirs is the essential strength supporting the giant above.

Tanglewood     £32.00

Disorientating, confusing, frightening, the trees grow close together, fighting for space they soar upwards to a hidden sky. Trunks entwine, embracing in their struggle for space. This is no place for man. The silent battle has no need of his intervention. Soon the strongest will spread its canopy and shade out the rest who will shrink and die.

Ramparts     £32.00
Mosses, algaes, fungi and seedlings are slowly reducing the remains of a large tree, but its erstwhile size and strength can still be seen in the mass of woody ribs which make up the last of a massive trunk. Standing like guards round a burial ground the tree's children still stand tall reaching for the sun.

Foundations     £32.00

Time and man has cut bent and broken the tree, but it grows on from its foundation of roots now exposed by wind and rain, Knarled and twisted growing thick skinned in the air, the tree's holdfast digs deeper down below the bank, forever seeking the earths core.

The 'Tree Spirits' Limited Edition series of aqua-tint etchings celebrates the spirit and essence of trees. There are now eight images in the series, image size ca 10 cms x 15 cms (ca 4" x 6").
